Melted Crayon Art

I've been seeing a lot of crafts on Pinterest using crayons and melting them to create some cool effects. So I thought, "Hey, I have a ton of crayons and a hair dryer, so why not?"

I started by organizing all my crayons in a rainbow- harder than it sounds when you have 7 shades of dark blues. Then there were more hard choices. For example- do I want all the "Crayola" parts facing the same direction? How to I want to line up the crayons- by the bottoms? By the "Crayola"? By the tips?

I decided to line up the crayons by the swirl ribbon near the tip.

Then it was time to glue down the crayons and let it dry. I just used regular Elmer's glue and it worked great.

Once dry, I took the canvas and my hairdryer to the patio, taped up a garbage bag to the wall, and leaned the canvas up against the wall with the crayons on top (tips facing down).

And then the fun part! You just hold the hair dryer over some crayons until the wax melts, once it starts, you can use the force of the air to make some "drips" longer or shorter, and you can give them a general direction to go.

The cool thing about this craft, is that when you think it's perfect- it's perfect.

This is my completed project! I decided that I want it to "drip up" instead of down. I could have made all the drips the same relative length, or I could have tried to mix the colors better. It's really all what you want, and it's a cheap, time-savvy craft, so if you mess up, it's not that big a deal. Plus, it's hard to mess up something so subjective. Husband bought me a pack of two 11x17 white canvases, and a 48-pack of Crayola crayons all for about $6.

I also made a smaller version for my friend's birthday. I used an 8x8 canvas (pack of 6 for $2) and 2 packs of neon Crayola (each pack has 8 crayons and was $0.99) crayons. For hers I broke the crayons in half and lined them up using the edge of the canvas.

The neon in real life is much more vivid!

The First Post

This is the first post in my new blog. The purpose of this blog is more or less to be a photo-documentary of the progression of crafts and life events, and the life I live with Husband and Puppy. We're a pretty fun bunch.

Husband and I are both tech-y geeks, he's an engineer and I'm a physicist. As a unit, we like watching Food Network, eating dessert, and running. We love to play with Puppy, even though she only wants to play one game. Ever. We're active in our Church, our families, and in our friends' lives.

Husband enjoys relaxing and playing video games, as well as watching movies and reading. He loves candy and cookies. Husband is an excellent baker of desserts and things, and is quite a wordsmith. Such a wordsmith, indeed, that I wonder if I should have him narrate this blog, while I supply the material.

I enjoy relaxing with projects- crafts and such. I also enjoy being outdoors in the sun with a good book, a snack, water and a hammock. Now I just need to get that hammock. I'm learning to cook and sometimes dinner is awesome.. and sometimes not so much. I enjoy cleaning, for the results- not the activity.
This was the only picture I had of Husband and I on my work computer,
but I think it sums us up pretty well.

And this picture of Puppy accurately potrays her sunny, playful disposition.

As you can tell by how active we are and in so many things, I probably won't find the time to update this blog too often. But I promise I will when I get the time. Most likely, the posting will occur after a 'project' has been completed, so I can post the progressive pictures from the whole event.

Stay tuned, there's more to come.
